Freedom of Information ActApril 16, 2012 To all faculty and staff associated with research: The Freedom of Information Act and the related Government in the Sunshine Act (5 USC 552b), which opened agency meetings and deliberations, were responses to public opinion that many of the government’s records and documents were unavailable to the general public. The Freedom of Information Act is often confused in the lay person’s mind as a regulation which allows unfettered access to any and all data produced at an organization. THIS IS NOT THE CASE and university personnel should be aware that any requests for data supported by federal funding must be made to the federal government. NOT the organization (university). Only appropriately designated and trained university personnel should respond to requests for information from the federal government.
