EN 551:Environmental Chemistry of Soils and Natural Surfaces
Soil is a mixture of inorganic and organic solids, air, water, and microorganisms. Soil affects the environmental chemistry through the interactions at solution-solid and air-solid interfaces, and the soil in turn is affected by the environmental and human activities. Soil science is not only important to agriculture, but also to diverse fields, such as environmental engineering, biogeochemistry, and hydrology. This course will enable students to understand the chemical properties of soil, soil minerals, natural surfaces, and mechanisms regulating solute chemistry in soil solutions. The fate and transport of inorganic and organic pollutants in soil and soil remediation technologies are discussed. One year of introductory chemistry is required for students who want to take this course.
EN 550:Environmental Chemistry of Atmospheric Processes
An introduction to the science underlying the description of atmospheric processes and air pollution control, including: composition of atmosphere; sources, transport, and fate of pollutants; chemical and photochemical reactions; properties of aerosols and effects of air pollution on climate and water; and adsorption, absorption, filtration, and chemical destruction pollutants in air pollution control systems.
Senior design courses. Complete design sequence with a required capstone project spanning two semesters. While the focus is on the capstone disciplinary design experience, it includes the two-credit core module on E 421 Engineering Economic Design during the first semester.

Technologies Developed:
Development of a titanium-based adsorbent for treatment of arsenic and heavy metals from drinking water (patent pending). The adsorbent has been used successfully for the removal of arsenic and uranium in contaminated water
Development of household filtration units for removal of arsenic from well water in Bangladesh. An effective, simple, and inexpensive filtration process has been developed for treatment of arsenic in well water. Three arsenic free villages were established in Bangladesh to demonstrate Stevens filtration process. The Technical Advisory Group of Bangladesh Arsenic Mitigation Water Supply Project has recommended Stevens filtration process for nationwide use
Development of water treatment technologies for removal of heavy metals with metallic iron. A cost-effective water treatment technology using metallic iron filters has been developed (patent pending). A full-scale unit has been installed in Georgia for treatment of contaminated groundwater
Development of a direct coprecipitation filtration process. Full-scale units have been used successfully for arsenic removal from contaminated groundwater at environmental remediation sites in Texas and Washington since 1997
